The elephant sacrificed his life to save others

大象舍身救人

Long long ago, there was a Buddhist king in the Indian deer wild field, who governed his country by his great mercy, but was encountered suffering slander from his five hundred ministers. Neither did he grow his hate from heart, on the contrary, he grew his mercy deeply from heart to them. The king thought that if there were unreasonable things existing under my governing, I’d rather let them to seek another holy empire. Hence, the king expelled all these five hundred ministers out of his border instead of killing them.

久远之前,在印度鹿野苑有一梵施国王,此国王以大慈悲心治理国政,但却横遭五百大臣诋毁。国王听到消息后不仅不生嗔心,反而对他们生起悲心。国王心想:若我执政有不合理之处,不如干脆将这五百人请出国门,请他们另觅圣主。于是国王没有加害他们,只把他们全部驱逐出境。

These five hundred ministers arrived to a desert desolation island who extremely suffered thirst from no water of drinking, they all became parched mouth and scorched tongue and burst out crying loud.

这五百人来到某一荒凉沙漠岛上,众人无水解渴,各个口干舌燥、痛苦万分,大家都失声痛哭起来。

Buddha Shakyamuni was once an elephant living in the desert field at that time. He hurriedly brought the spring water by his nose to quench their thirst, and let them ridding on his back to make a abundant drink deeply in the mountain, and guided them to swallow the fruits freely as well. Finally, the elephant told them, “There is another mountain behind, and you can find a dead body of one elephant at the foot of that mountain. You cannot pass through the island but to prepare plenty of fruits. Hence, you can use internal organs and intestines and so on of that elephant, meanwhile, you can store the fruits into the empty body of it to meet the need while passing through the island.”

无等大师释迦牟尼佛在因地时曾为一只大象,就生活于此沙漠地带。它听到哭声后,急忙用鼻子卷起泉水带来给这些人解渴,又让五百人骑于自己身上到一深山里猛喝一顿,还引领他们自由自在吞食水果。最后大象告诉众人道:此山后面有一山,在其山脚下有一只大象尸体。你们要走过此荒岛必得准备充足水果,否则肯定无法通过。故而你们可用此大象内脏、肠子等物以为食粮,同时还可将水果装进已被掏空之大象身躯,以备穿行荒岛之需。

The elephant climbed towards to the top of the mountain, and vowed, “I have rescued the poor beings from the dangerous circumstances. So as to save them thoroughly, I’m willing to sacrifice my life. Of my desire wish is to rescue them in the metempsychosis wildness too when I am being Buddha.” The elephant was making a wish while climbing up to the top of the mountain, then jumped down to the cliff.

大象说完即向山顶爬去,并发愿道:我已将此等可怜众生从危险境地中救出,为彻底拯救他们,我愿舍弃自身生命。愿我成佛后,也能将他们从轮回荒野中救度出来。大象边发愿边爬到山顶,然后纵身一跃、跳下悬崖。

The ministers came to the foot of the mountain told by the elephant, and really found a dead body of an elephant. Everybody said in a deep sadness, “It was the elephant that vouchsafe us with fruits and spring before. How can we touch its body after getting its extreme kindness when we were in need. Our hands may become rotting away by once touching.”Then all the ministers dared not touch.

众大臣按大象吩咐来至山脚下,果然发现一具大象尸体。众人悲哀不已地说道:昨日赐我们以水果、甘泉、并进而赋予我们生命之大象,正是这只死象。此象对我们恩德极大,我们如何能触摸其身体?一旦摸到,恐我们双手都会烂掉。五百大臣于是皆不敢用手去碰。

One deity in the sky saw and said to the ministers, “This venerable nagasena sacrifice his life for you all, you ought to follow his words so as to satisfy his wish as well.”All ministers heard that and began to take out all internal organs and intestines from the elephant’s body with tears in their eyes, then put fruits and leaves and so on into it, and finally made offerings to the elephants body with great respect.

净居天天人看到后便告诉众大臣说:此大尊者乃为你们而舍弃生命,你们理应按其所说行事,如此才会使他愿望得以满足。大臣们听到后就忍悲含泪取出大象内脏、肠子等物,并装进水果、草叶等,然后对大象尸体恭敬供养。

The five hundred ministers eventually passed through the wildness depending on the dead body of the elephant, and they all made wishes and said, “We are willing to moksha from the metempsychosis when the elephant is becoming Buddha.” All were making wishes while their leaving there.

五百人后凭此大象尸体安然走过荒野之时,众大臣一起发愿道:愿这只大象成佛时,我们也能从轮回旷野中得到解脱。众人一边发愿,一边离开此地。

In addition, once upon a time, Shakyamuni was lotus king of Indian deer wild field at one generation. He always treated all living creatures with mercy and tender just like that a son got from his mother. Furthermore, he gave all sorts of alms for those in need. At that time, his people suffered dropsy from inharmonious wild and rain. The lotus king took pity on all suffered people and convened all the doctors immediately as well as asking them to make diagnosis and giving treatment to the people in need. But after experiencing a long time the epidemic still spread without any relief. All the doctors said to him that there wouldn’t be any help but only the meat of a kind of fish called Roheda.

另外,久远之前,释迦牟尼佛曾有一世于印度鹿野苑为莲花国王,他对一切众生均如母对独子般慈悲爱怜,且经常广行种种布施。当时因风雨不调,国中民众普得浮肿怪病。莲花王对疾苦众生颇生悲悯,立即召集所有医生为国人诊治,但历经多时仍不见民众疫情有所缓解。众医者均道只有若和达鱼肉方能对治此病,除此之外,别无任何良策。

The king sent people to seek by all means, but nothing was gained by experiencing twists and turns. After then, the king was crowded around with the sicks on his going out a trip, and was begged that,“My respectful king, please do save us, make us getting rid of such torment of suffering diseases.” The king felt sorrowful by hearing their begging, and burst into tears with sadness together with guilty. He thought by himself that what did his King title really mean if he couldn’t relieve pains of his people. At the thought of that moment, he decided to donate all his treasures and transferred his kingship to his eldest son, and confessed deeply in front of all family members and his people. In addition to this, the king highly praised his ministers and let them all feel joyful, meanwhile, he also comforted the sick people. After then, he held the eight off fast by himself, and made offerings to all Buddhas in the ten directions with incense and flowers. In the end, the lotus king made a wish towards the east, “I am willing to sacrifice my life to become the Roheda fish in the Docy River after experiencing the pains of all pitiful beings by my own eyes.” After that, he jumped into Docy River after saying the words.

国王即刻遣人多方寻找,但几经周折也无任何收获。后有一次当国王外出时,病人团团将国王围拢,且哀求道:万望国王救我等性命,令我等摆脱疾病折磨。国王闻言悲心顿起,且因难过、愧疚而流下伤心泪水。他心里想到:我不能解除众生痛苦,要此国王头衔又有何用?思虑及此,他便将自己所有财富全部布施一空,又将王位让与大太子,同时在亲友及众人前猛厉忏悔。国王还对王公大臣多加赞叹以令其生欢喜心,且数数安慰可怜病者。自己又亲守八关斋戒,并于王宫顶层以香、花供养十方诸佛。最后,莲花王面向东方发愿道:我亲眼目睹身染疾患众生惨不忍睹之可怜情状后,愿以舍弃我自己生命之真实力,入于多西大河中,变为若和达鱼。说完就从王宫直接跳入多西大河中。

The king died at once after jumping into the water and turned into the Roheda fish. All deities in the sky announced everywhere, “There is a Roheda fish in Docy River with whose meat all the sick people suffered dropsy for a long time can be cured.” By hearing this, all the people strived to be the first to cut the meat of the Roheda fish by sharp knives. The king who had been turned into the Roheda fish was filled with complete mercy to the people eating his meat, then he thought in full confidence with tears that I had been greatly benefiting from all my body shared with the beings. Hence he had been satisfying all the needs of the sick people with his blood and meat in the following twelve years, and had peacefully been in a position of the supreme Bodhi way and never to be receding.

国王入水后立即死亡,并马上转生成若和达鱼。诸天天人随即四处宣布:多西大河里有若和达鱼,它之身肉实为长期罹患浮肿病病人真正甘露。听到消息后,人们争先恐后手执利刃前往河中割取若和达鱼肉。已变成鱼之国王,对食己身肉之众生满含慈悲,他边流泪边充满信心地想到:如我血肉能对众生有利,此则为我最大获益。国王如是于十二年中以自身血肉满足众生治病之需,并以此而令自己安处无上菩提之道,且毫无退转。

After curing all the sick people, the Roheda fish said, “You all should listen to me within your soul. I was once lotus king, and I sacrificed my life to turn into a Roheda fish for curing your diseases. Just keep such joyful feeling about that. Once I get the most supreme Bohdi position, I will let all of you moksha from the metempsychosis of diseases, and let you be the thorough and completeness of nirvana.” The new king and all the ministers together with all people made offerings to the lotus king with all kinds of flowers and so on after hearing his absolute sincere speech. Then they made a wish together, “By respecting your wide benevolence, we are willing to be your Sravakayana Buddhists when you are being Buddha.”

待全部医好众生疾患后,若和达鱼开口说道:嗟!你们理应谛听:我本是莲花国王,我为你们才舍弃自己生命变成若和达鱼身,你们均应对我行持起欢喜之意。一旦我获无上圆满菩提果位,我必将你们都从轮回疾病中解脱,且安置你等皆处于最究竟圆满涅槃。听到国王满腔赤忱话语,新国王、王公大臣与民众皆以鲜花等各种供品进行供养,且共同发愿道:广行令人难以置信行持之国王,待你成佛时,愿我等皆能成为你声闻弟子。
